Strap Guide: Grand Seiko SLGB003 “Ice Forest”

Introduction

Inspired by the snow-covered Kirigamine Highlands, the SLGB003 “Ice Forest” — part of Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Collection — features several technical improvements over previous models. Most notably, its 9RB2 Spring Drive movement boasts “Ultra Fine Accuracy” of +/- 20 seconds annually. This unprecedented precision is compactly packaged into a 37mm, Zaratsu-polished, titanium case — perfect for my 6.5-inch wrist. And while the stock micro-adjustable clasp is Grand Seiko’s first, the 20mm lug width and neutral colour scheme are perfect for the creative outlets of strap enthusiasts. In contrast to that of the SBGA221 “Snowflake,” the power reserve indicator is viewed through the sapphire caseback, leaving the exquisite herringbone dial uninterrupted except for a date window. As demonstrated by the diverse selection below, the Ice Forest can be dressed up or down to fit any occasion.

Navy Shell Cordovan Slim

An obvious choice. Derived from equine fascia, shell cordovan boasts extreme durability and an easy-to-maintain sheen. This remarkable ungulate leather forms undulating rolls, as opposed to creases, allowing the textures of the dial to steal the show. Shinki Hikaku Tannery’s navy blue nearly perfectly matches the tempered-blue second hand, showcasing the combined beauty of Japanese watch- and leather-making. The blue and silver colour scheme is striking but versatile and can be paired with clothing in shades of brown, grey, orange or even pink.

Matte Cognac Alligator Flank Stitchless

A timeless choice. Alligator’s label as an “exotic” leather is a bit of a misnomer in this context. With its instantly recognisable pattern, alligator represents one of the most traditional materials used in luxury watch straps. This strap adds serious colour and texture to an otherwise understated watch. The mid-brown and silver colour scheme is classic and versatile, and can be paired with clothing in blue, green, grey or lighter browns.

Cream Saffiano Stitchless

An elegant choice. The leather’s embossed crosshatch pattern elevates both its durability and style. Associated with brands such as Prada, Saffiano epitomises tasteful sophistication. The subdued hue of this strap parallels that of the watch itself, accentuating the delicate textures of both. As the cream and silver colour scheme is largely neutral, take the opportunity to pair this with clothing in contrasting dark colours, such as midnight navy, burgundy or black.

Matte Turquoise Alligator Flank Stitchless

An adventurous choice. This strap confidently disregards the traditionally formal nature of alligator, adding fun and flair to any outfit. The captivating colour is a compliment magnet and will certainly draw eyes to your wrist, so be prepared for the attention! The turquoise and silver colour scheme is bright and bold and can be paired with clothing in white, brown, or orange.

Nubuck Denim Ostrich Leg Signature

An exotic choice — yet my personal favourite for daily wear. In contrast to more familiar exotic leathers such as alligator, crocodile or lizard, ostrich leg leather possesses a uniquely irregular pattern. The nubuck finishing produces a soft nap that makes this strap feel premium and casual at the same time. The sky-blue colouration supplements the watch’s dark blue second hand. This light blue and sliver color scheme is bright and clean and can be paired with clothing in white, brown or dark blue.
