Strap Guide: Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600

Strap Guide written by @brandtunThank you, Øyvind!

Introduction

The Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 is, without question, the watch I wear the most. It is the one I reach for instinctively, whether I am travelling, working, or simply heading out for the day. There is a reassuring familiarity to it, both in terms of how it wears and what it represents, that few modern watches manage to replicate.

My example is from 1999, a Swiss-only piece that sits in a particularly appealing transitional period of Rolex production. The case features drilled lug holes, a detail that immediately signals its tool-watch origins and makes strap changes refreshingly straightforward. It is fitted with the solid-link Oyster bracelet, an important upgrade over earlier hollow-link bracelets, while still retaining hollow end links very much characteristic of the era.

There is no cyclops, no ceramic bezel, and no unnecessary embellishment. At 40 mm in diameter and just under 15mm thick, the Sea-Dweller has real substance on the wrist, reinforced by a depth rating of 1,220 metres. Despite this, it remains remarkably adaptable off the bracelet, provided the strap respects the watch’s underlying purpose. Below are five Delugs straps that each bring out a different, but entirely credible, side of the Sea-Dweller.

1. White Waffle CTS Rubber

This is, in many ways, the most natural alternative to the Oyster bracelet.

The waffle texture references vintage dive straps without feeling retro or costume-like, and the CTS rubber has a reassuring density that suits the Sea-Dweller’s weight. The white colour creates a strong contrast against the black dial and bezel, giving the watch a distinctly maritime character, almost regatta-adjacent without undermining its seriousness. The leaf-spring deployant clasp and Cut-To-Size feature make this strap an all-over favourite for many.

On the wrist, this combination feels purposeful and modern. The white rubber highlights the drilled lugs and tool-watch nature of the case, while the taper to 16 mm keeps the overall look balanced rather than bulky. It is an excellent choice for summer wear, travel, or any situation where the watch is meant to be used rather than admired from a distance.

2. Orange Rubberised Leather (Togo) Signature

This strap leans into the Sea-Dweller’s professional DNA, but with a more contemporary, almost experimental edge.

The rubberised Togo leather offers the structure and grain of leather, with added durability and a slightly matte finish that works well with the brushed surfaces of the case. The orange colour is a deliberate nod to diving equipment, saturation markers and safety accents, yet it remains controlled rather than loud.

What makes this strap work is restraint. On a watch as serious as the Sea-Dweller, orange could easily tip into novelty. Here, it does not. Instead, it adds character and individuality, particularly effective when worn casually with neutral clothing. It is a strap for someone who understands the rules well enough to bend them.

3. Matte Grey Storm Alligator Signature

While the Sea-Dweller is rarely associated with alligator leather, this combination is surprisingly coherent. Provided the execution is correct.

The matte grey storm alligator is a strong alternative to matte black, as it somehow feels more versatile. The subdued grey tone softens the watch visually, reducing its perceived mass and making it more adaptable in semi-formal settings. The matte finish is critical here; anything glossy would feel at odds with the watch’s utilitarian roots.

This strap transforms the Sea-Dweller into a low-key, almost academic expression of a dive watch — technical, understated and quietly confident. It is not trying to turn the Sea-Dweller into a dress watch, but rather to show that function-led design can still sit comfortably outside its original environment.

4. Cream Epsom Slim

This is the most unconventional choice in the guide, perhaps the most interesting and certainly a personal favourite. I get strong associations with black turtlenecks, loafers with no socks and a 300-foot personal yacht anchored at the Amalfi coast.

The slim Epsom leather in cream introduces a deliberate tension between the ruggedness of the Sea-Dweller and the refinement of the strap. The result is a watch that feels lighter, more relaxed, and distinctly European in character. The fine grain of Epsom leather adds structure without visual weight, and the slim profile ensures the watch does not feel top-heavy.

This is not a strap for diving, and it does not pretend to be. Instead, it works exceptionally well for everyday wear like coffee, travel, long walks and the sort of situations where the watch is part of your life rather than the centre of attention.

5. Light Grey Nubuck Slim

The light grey nubuck strap is perhaps the most tactile and understated option in this guide. It clings to your wrist like an ex with low self-esteem but without the feeling of suffocation.

Its soft, suede-like texture immediately changes how the Sea-Dweller is perceived on the wrist. The light grey tone complements the steel case beautifully, softening the overall appearance while maintaining a neutral, versatile palette. The slim construction is essential here, preventing the watch from feeling top-heavy.

This strap works exceptionally well for extended wear. It is comfortable, discreet and quietly elegant, offering a more relaxed interpretation of the Sea-Dweller without stripping it of its identity. For everyday use, especially in cooler months, it is a genuinely compelling alternative to the bracelet.

Closing Thoughts

The Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 is often described as overbuilt, and rightly so. Yet it is precisely this robustness that allows it to adapt so well to different straps. Whether on rubber, leather, or something more unconventional, the watch remains unmistakably itself.

Delugs’ strength lies in proportion, material quality, and finish, all of which are essential when working with a reference as honest and uncompromising as the 16600. Choose the strap carefully, and the watch will reward you with a versatility that is easy to underestimate.
