Strap Guide: Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI

Strap Guide: Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI

Strap Guide written by @gulenissen

Introduction

Before starting the straps, we need to clarify the deal with this silver-dialed Speedmaster. Viewer discretion is advised; if you’re a purist, please skip right to the first strap selection.

This is NOT a White Gold (Canopus) of any sort. This creation started life as a "Sapphire Sandwich" ref. 3573.50.00 about a decade ago, and during the pandemic, it got a makeover by lending an NOS dial and matching hands from a ref. BC345.0802.

According to Omega lore, the brand introduced two sets of Speedmasters in precious metals in 1980 to commemorate the Space Shuttle missions. A yellow gold Speedmaster and a white gold Speedmaster. Exact numbers haven’t been confirmed, but it’s estimated that there were approximately 300 production units in total: 20 in white gold and about 280 in yellow gold.

Luckily Omega also made spare parts. The result is, however, a slick-looking Speedy that resembles the current Canopus model, but without the weight, price, and prestige.

An instant conversation starter with any WIS.

Orange Rubberised Leather (Togo) Signature Strap

Touching rubberised leather always screws with my senses. It feels like both rubber and leather simultaneously. The result is a sturdy synthetic material with scratch- and water-resistant attributes.

Orange straps have always felt right on whiter/lighter dials (let’s blame that on the Rolex Explorer II). This combo is tailor-made for hot and humid summer nights and rolled-up sleeves.

Or even light rain showers—just don’t push those chronograph pushers!

Glossy Grey Crocodile Flank Stitchless Strap

The glossy alligator feels and looks rather elevated. Just by putting on this strap, my posture improves instantly.

The lack of side stitching and large scales gives it a mid-20th-century look. Pardon the pretentiousness, but this is a strap for listening to Coltrane while sipping a glass of Hibiki. Let’s also add a cigar to this scenario taken from “Mad Men”.

If you’re not a Don Draper, it’s also perfect for the contemporary office worker—the alligator scales aren’t noticeable until you get close. Or pair it with grey knitwear, chinos, and clean sneakers, and you’re good to go!

Taupe Epsom Slim Strap

Epsom leather will always be associated with Hermès after the brand introduced it in 2004 for their Birkin and Kelly bags. Regardless of this, Epsom leather feels highly luxurious due to its embossed textured surface.

Taupe tends to play well with a lot of different color combinations, especially with grey or silver dials. By being slightly more subdued, the silver dial gets to retain the spotlight. The neutrality of taupe makes it a versatile combo that would serve anyone on most occasions.

White CTS Rubber Strap for Omega Speedmaster

The double-ridge design resembles the old double-ridged sharkskin straps Omega used to sell. Sizing the strap is a terrifying but simple process. All you need is a pair of scissors. And not to worry, there’s an extra strap in the box if you get too eager with the trimming.

A white strap may feel a bit bold, but you’ll warm up to it quickly. Perfect for summer, and even winter. The tapered design gives it a sporty feel. The micro-adjustment holes in the clasp are nifty if you’re ever in Singapore.

If a white strap is not for you, Delugs should have you covered with their other color options.

Gold Epsom Slim (Discontinued)

This strap has been in my collection for a while. Not sure if it’s still part of the current Delugs collection. According to the four-year-old order confirmation, it’s called “Gold Epsom.” And I adore the color.

It shares all the great attributes of the taupe strap mentioned above, but the warm shade adds some needed warmth to this rather cold and sterile dial.

It’s also scratch-resistant but still prone to some good old patina. It’s going to be exciting to see how these Epsom straps age.
