Strap Guide written by @tinkerwithtime. Thank you Nate!
Introduction
The Grand Seiko SBGA211 “Snowflake” was a watch I admired as I started my watch journey in late 2019. It stood out with that pure white dial, subtle texture and blued seconds hand.
Fast forward two years and many watches later (yes the watch bug bit hard) and I found myself in a Grand Seiko authorized dealer for the first time during a weekend getaway. Seeing pictures of Grand Seiko is one thing, but experiencing them in the metal is a must. The dial details, Zaratsu finishing and light play are incredible. After trying several models, the “Snowflake” stood above the rest to me due in part to the beautiful white textured dial (which I believe is one of the best). Another key factor was being mesmerized by the blued seconds hand smoothly gliding over the white backdrop. I understand why it continues being a classic in Grand Seiko’s lineup years later.
I quickly found the “Snowflake” is a versatile watch deserving of a good strap, or two, or five. Like the diverse nature of the straps, I attempted to showcase them in a variety of settings. I hope you enjoy this guide as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
Yellow Waxy Slim
This was my sleeper strap and I am glad I picked this one, with help from the wife. Let’s first talk about comfort. When Delugs states “no break-in required,” I can 100% vouch for this. The pull-up effect provides unique character which will patina and compliments the “Snowflake’s” lightly textured dial. The color combination and comfort of this strap surprised me the most. I liked it more than expected!
Denim Chevre Slim
The beautiful blue strap accentuates the blued seconds hand while the natural pebbled texture ties in the dial texture. I’m all about the textures as it adds visual interest. It offers a splash of color for fun, taking the “Snowflake” from winter mode to summer. Plus Chevre leather offers strong water and scratch-resistance, great for those days when I might get splashed by the kids or work up a sweat from the heat.
Cognac Crazy Horse Side-Stitich
Casual dad vibes is core to my style. T-shirt and jeans or shorts is what you’ll find me in the majority of the time. The side-stitch provides the perfect classic-casual look. Crazy horse leather combines a soft texture of Nubuck leather and patina properties of Pueblo leather. While my other choices start out with heavier textures, this strap will build character as time goes on.Nubuck Black Ostrich Signature
Nubuck Black Ostrich Signature
If you haven’t tried Ostrich leather, I highly recommend it. It offers unique textures which you don’t see on many leather goods and it’s super supple. I chose black for its versatility to dress up or down. The matte finish allows this to pair nicely with a t-shirt and the black texture can look the business when needed to be more formal. Do you ever see a strap and feel it was made just for your watch? That’s the feeling I had when seeing this incredible handcrafted alligator strap. The texture of alligator and brushed look give it a classy and artistic feel to match the dial. While the “Snowflake” is considered a sports watch, it cleans up well. This is a perfect strap to class it up and my favorite of the five.
